What is the Digital Switchover?
By December 2025, all analogue telephone lines in the UK will be permanently switched off. The old copper landline network, which has carried calls for over a century, is being replaced by a fully digital system known as VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). This means all calls will be made over a broadband connection, not a traditional phone line.
Why Does This Matter?
Many older alarm systems, particularly telecare devices and pendant alarms, still rely on analogue landlines to connect users to monitoring centres or emergency contacts. Once the digital switchover is complete, these devices may stop working altogether if they aren’t compatible.
This could put vulnerable people at risk if they press their alarm and help doesn’t come, simply because the signal couldn’t get through.
What Should You Do?
If you’re using a personal alarm, fall detector, or any home emergency response equipment, it’s essential to check:
- Is your alarm digital-ready?
- Does it work without relying on a landline?
- Has your supplier talked to you about the switchover?
If you’re not sure, speak to your provider as soon as possible.
