We’re often asked, “Why not just use an Apple AirTag?” when it comes to our GPS Personal Pendant. It’s a fair question … after all, AirTags are widely available, affordable, and small enough to clip onto keys, bags, or even clothing. But while there’s some crossover in what they can do, AirTags and GPS Pendants are designed for very different purposes.
Let’s take a look at the key differences—and where each might be useful.
1. How They Work
Apple AirTag
AirTags rely on Apple’s Find My network, which uses nearby iPhones to update the AirTag’s location. This works well in populated areas where iPhones are plentiful, but less so in remote or rural locations. AirTags don’t have their own GPS or cellular connection.
GPS Personal Pendant
Our GPS Pendant has its own built-in GPS chip and SIM card, which means it can send its live location directly … anywhere there’s a mobile signal. You’re not relying on strangers’ devices nearby, and you can get real-time tracking, nationwide.
2. Purpose-Built for Personal Safety
Apple AirTag
AirTags are designed to help you find lost items, like keys or bags. They’re not built with personal safety in mind and lack features like emergency calling, fall detection, or dedicated support contacts.
GPS Pendant
Our pendant is designed specifically for people, not things. It offers real-time tracking, an SOS button, two-way calling, and in some models, automatic fall alerts. It’s part of a personal safety plan, not just a way to see where something last was.
3. Battery Life and Alerts
Apple AirTag
AirTags use a watch-style battery and can last around a year, but they can’t alert you when a loved one leaves a safe zone or goes missing. They’re passive devices.
GPS Pendant
Our pendants are active devices. They can send alerts when someone leaves a set area, call a carer or family member with a single button press, and notify you of low battery or falls. They need recharging every few days—but that’s because they’re doing far more.
So… Can I Use an AirTag Instead?
If you’re tracking a pet’s collar or want a way to find your child’s school bag, an AirTag might be enough. But if you’re looking after an elderly relative, someone living with dementia, or a person with medical needs, an AirTag simply isn’t suitable. It can’t raise an alarm, speak to a carer, or offer reliable location tracking in real time.
In summary, AirTags are great little gadgets … for things. But when it comes to people, especially vulnerable individuals, you need more than a tag. You need peace of mind. That’s what our GPS Personal Pendant is built to deliver.
